How to choose a safety door that suits your house
Most people walk into a door showroom with a photo on their phone and walk out with something completely different. That is not a bad thing. Here is the order we would think through the decisions if we were buying for our own house.
Start with the opening, not the door
Measure the brick opening, not the old door leaf, and note whether the wall is solid brick, block or a dry partition. A heavy steel leaf in a lightweight partition is a problem waiting to happen. Photograph the reveal, the floor finish and anything mounted nearby such as an intercom or a switchboard.
Then decide what the door is for
A grille door in front of a timber main door does a different job from a single reinforced leaf. If you want airflow in the evening, you want bar work. If you want a barrier that resists a determined attempt for as long as possible, you want a solid leaf with five-point locking and hinge bolts.
Material follows exposure
Direct rain on the leaf points to aluminium or aluminium wood. A sheltered porch or an internal corridor opens up steel and timber. In Klang and the coastal strip we lean aluminium unless there is a specific reason not to.
Bar spacing matters more than bar thickness
A 25mm bar at 140mm centres is easier to work through than a 19mm bar at 90mm centres. Ask for the spacing figure, not just the bar size, and look at the door from an arm-through perspective.
Count the locking points
One deadbolt is a single failure point. Three points spread the load across the height of the leaf. Five points plus fixed hinge bolts is what we specify when the opening faces a back lane or a quiet side street.
Leave the colour until last
Finish is the easiest thing to change on paper and the hardest to change afterwards. Once the material, the pattern and the hardware are settled, take the samples outside and look at them in daylight against your wall colour.
