A ten minute care routine that doubles door life

Doors rarely fail suddenly. They stiffen, they squeak, they collect grit in the track, and one day the lock will not throw. Ten minutes twice a year prevents almost all of it.

Wash with plain water first

Dust here is abrasive and often slightly salty. Rinse the leaf and frame with clean water, then wipe with a soft cloth and a drop of neutral detergent. Never use thinner, scouring cream or a wire brush on a powder-coated surface.

Dry the bottom rail

Water sits in the bottom rail and behind the sweep strip. That is where corrosion starts on steel and where mould starts on timber. Run a dry cloth along it and leave the door open for a few minutes.

Two drops in the cylinder, no more

Use a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant in the keyway. Oil attracts dust and turns into paste inside a mortice. Hinges take a light machine oil at the pin, wiped off after working the door.

Check the strike alignment

Close the door slowly and watch the bolt enter the strike plate. If it scrapes the edge, the leaf has settled. A hinge screw tightened at the right moment saves a lock replacement later.

Look at the seals once a year

Perished weather strip lets rain track along the frame. Replacement strip costs very little and is a five minute job on most of our profiles.

Where to take it from here

If any of this raised more questions than it answered, that is normal. Call the Klang office on +60 3-3324 7180, or send the details of your opening through the enquiry form and we will reply with something specific rather than a brochure.

How to choose a safety door that suits your house

Most people walk into a door showroom with a photo on their phone and walk out with something completely different. That is not a bad thing. Here is the order we would think through the decisions if we were buying for our own house.

What is actually inside a digital door lock

Digital locks are sold on features. Fingerprints, apps, cameras, voice prompts. What decides whether you are happy with one three years later is far more boring than any of that.
