What is actually inside a digital door lock
Digital locks are sold on features. Fingerprints, apps, cameras, voice prompts. What decides whether you are happy with one three years later is far more boring than any of that.
The motor does the real work
Behind the glossy panel is a small geared motor that throws the same mortice bolts a key would. If the motor and gearbox are underspecified, the lock struggles the moment the door drops a millimetre on its hinges. We size the lock to the leaf weight rather than the other way round.
Sensors age differently
Optical fingerprint readers get confused by wet or worn fingertips. Capacitive readers cope better with the humidity here, which is why we stock them almost exclusively. Card readers are the most durable of all and the least convenient.
Battery behaviour tells you a lot
A good lock warns you for two weeks before it dies, holds its user list without power, and takes standard AA cells you can buy at any pharmacy. Proprietary battery packs are a maintenance trap.
The override is not optional
Every lock we fit keeps a mechanical keyway hidden behind a cover, and an external contact for a nine-volt battery. Keep the emergency key somewhere other than inside the house it opens.
Installation decides reliability
Most digital lock complaints we are called out to are alignment problems, not electronics. A door that needs a shove to close is a door whose lock will be blamed within the year.
